If you like ghost peppers, then you’ll love this easy method to make ghost pepper powder. I’ve been making homemade hot sauces and hot pepper powders for years.
The main reason is that I can get the right amount of spices in my sauces and I can combine different types of peppers and seasonings in both the hot sauce and ground hot pepper blends.
Not to mention that buying ghost pepper powder or ghost pepper flakes can be costly. It doesn’t cost much money to grow your own ghost peppers and dehydrate them.
You can then grind it into a fine powder for recipes or grind it coarsely for ghost pepper flakes.
What is the best way to eat a ghost pepper?
First, let me start by saying that if you eat a ghost pepper raw or by itself, you probably have no taste buds. I can eat very spicy foods and find no reason to eat a ghost pepper by itself.
The Bhut Jolokia should be eaten in small amounts that have been added to recipes like sauces.
Ghost pepper flakes can be eaten as a topping on foods or also added to recipes. The best way to eat ghost peppers is to throw them in the smoker and make smoked ghost pepper flakes.
The Carolina Reaper vs Ghost Pepper
The ghost pepper held the title of the hottest pepper in the world until the Carolina reaper came along. The reaper has a Scoville rating of over 2 million and the ghost pepper has a Scoville rating of just over a million. Both peppers pack plenty of heat and shouldn’t be eaten by themselves. But, I’ve seen plenty of pepper heads take a bite out of one, only to regret it later.
Homemade ghost pepper powder
Before you start making your very own homemade ghost pepper powder make sure you have disposable kitchen gloves. What you don’t want to do is accidentally rub your eyes or other areas after handling the peppers.
Start by getting a half-pound of fresh ghost peppers. You can dry them in a dehydrator or an oven. The oven method will take much longer and you’ll also need adequate ventilation. I recommend you make the dried ghost peppers in a food dehydrator. The only other thing you’ll need is a food and spice grinder.
